Koma-spinning? What's that!
The Koma-top is an old Japanese toy and Koma-spinning has a long tradition.
There are many theories about the origin of the two Chinese Characters which form the word "koma" but we don't know further details.

For example the so-called Beygoma.
Every Japanese child knows or has played with a Koma.
Koma is also used for gambling and even fortune-telling.
And there is a so-called Gyro-Koma which is used for teaching science in Japan.
In this homepage we introduce the so called Tetsuwa-Goma which has a steel ring around the rim for artistic and acrobatic performances.

To get some idea about the technique and art and it is perhaps best to talk about the Kyoku-Goma (Trick-Top).
A rather big Koma with a long axle which is used for artistic performances.
From around 1700 AD (Genroku era)
The Kyoku-Goma has been produced in Hakata (now in Fukuoka city) and seems to have first been demonstrated by a boy called Hatsutaro in performances in Kyoto.
